“Societi Bistro is a neighbourhood ‘local’. For 11 years, we have been a sanctuary for Capetonians and visitors looking for a home from home. More than cuisine – it’s a way of life – taking time to savour a meal and enjoy the company of family and friends. We love it! It’s an extension of our homes.” – Peter Weetman, Owner
Restaurant design is one of the most exciting, rewarding and challenging projects for me personally. There is something about creating a space where people can get together as friends, family, close business deals, celebrate or simply have a casual glass of great wine. Designing this in a way where you honour the heritage of the existing building, gives the space a personality which very few can artificially recreate. Societi Bistro is this very space for me.
This 200 year-old Georgian-style house in Cape Town’s Orange Street has been restored with a beautiful regard for the heritage of this old home and therefor comes as no surprise to be one of my favourite restaurants in Cape Town. The space offers a beautiful outdoor space for Summer dining, yet in Winter is marked as one of the cosiest spots around. Few places beat The Snug with it’s fireplace, fries with home-made mayo and a glass of red from the extensive selection of quality wines.
This year marks the 10th year of M.Christian Smith Design Studio’s existence and with a brand new website it seems to be significant to be featured as part of the new Autumn 2015 menu. To be associated with a restaurant that offers great quality food, excellent service and unparalleled consistency leaves me honoured and humbled. It is a great privilege to be included in this long-standing tradition and I can only look forward to many more shared meals at this favourite neighbourhood establishment.
On that note, I’m off tonight to go try the dish that literally has my name on it! Bon Appétit!
